Question Car will not pull in D or R and rolls in Park. GRINDING!!!!!!!!

I was pulling away from a light the other morning and all of a sudden I heard what sounded like aloud explosion and then a loud grinding sound and the car coasted to a stop. Now with the car running if I put the car in R, N, or D it starts grinding loudly and when I put it back in P at keeps on grinding until I turn the engine off. Also the wheels spin even if the car is in P. I have removed both CV axles it does the same thing. Can somebody please give me an idea of what I have going on here. I have asked several people who claim to be mechanics and have been told everything from the cv axles, to the differential, to the tranny. PLEASE HELP.

sounds like what has happened is the extension shaft (which connects the trans to the diff) has failed.

+1 def sounds like the extension shaft or the differential.

The extension shaft is located on the pass side of the trans near the bell housing, it is behind a rubber cover and uses a 36mm socket to remove the sealing bolt, and then you will need a special tool to pull the extension shaft....

Is that the bolt that takes a 1/2" drive ratchet to take off? How can I determine if that is the problem? I really need to get my car going today and I don't have a clue!!!

have a breaker bar or a pipe you can slide over the handle of the ratchet for a little extra leverage? That bolt is on pretty tight....
