Thats exactly what I said above!!! I actually did do this until I bought a new bolt after I stripped mine. I think it should actually be stronger

man, i didn't read this whole thread, but i'd listen to sr5guys advice, i had my joint come apart after i did a rack job, and also it came out at a low speed. i felt it skip trying to turn at a highspeed, got off the highway, and it poped out completly at a low speed. scary.

Well, inspected mine at the splines were fine.

I sad f*** the world and drilled through that shit. Installed a stainless bolt, lock washer, and nut. Locktited the whole mess. Wish me luck.

Bump for some good, relevant info! I'm about to replace the rack on my car. Took out the rack on my parts car and boy was that bolt rusty. I suspect the bolt on my car won't be so rusty but it still is peace of mind for 50 cents.

Good call.

I always used a 1/4 drive hand wrench to put that (and various other) bolts in. You have to have the knuckle in just the right spot and you need to feel that everything in progressing easily. The air wrench spells failure on this one.

I rebuilt many legend racks and never had one knuckle fall ill on me, I think largely because I always used a light wrench until that final "tweak" to torque it.

What are symptoms of this issue? I am noticing that when driving, I can wiggle the steering wheel left and right a bit without getting response. Should I get looking into tightening that bolt?

It could be. I have the same problem but I think it's due to actual parts in the rack and pinion going out. As per this thread...

If I were you, I'd get under your car and look at that joint.
