I didn't have to shim mine at all. The pinion bearing still mated up almost dead center to the ring gear after install. I also had the right amount of backlash.

Only tools you will need once the diff is out:

Nylon deadblow hammer
Oven or bearing warmer
Socket (12mm I think and 10)
Bearing puller or three legged pulley puller
Brake clean

The differential innards come out as one piece and you're pretty much swapping over the ring gear and VSS gear. New or reuse your differential carrier bearings.

The pinion should sit just about where you need it to already. Only adjustments I can see are the side thrust washers to move the ring gear closer or further away from the differential.

Some extra pics to go along with the DIY thread linked above.

Pulling VSS gear

Same puller was too fat at the feet to get under the bearing.

I bought this from Autozone fit better

Orion Modified his:

To put the bearings and VSS on I had the oven at 250*, let them sit for about 10 mins. Their temp was about 180* when I slid them on. Slight tap with nylon mallet and it was good. Listen for sound change so you know it's bottomed out.

Whole unit goes back in as one piece. Honda Bond and reinstall cover like the PG DIY. No fooling with the diff pin or any of that part of the PG DIY.

Default MFactory LSD Group Buy

Not a problem. I have some vids around too.

The biggest reason I can see for the need for thrust washers are the variations in casting of the differential housing. When measuring side by side the differentials themselves were identical. Therefore the need for changing thrust washers should be minimal. Since you're using the same housing. Every differential should be closer to spec compared to the cast housing.

+1

Got the new LSD carrier installed in the housing this afternoon! (It's a cast iron MT diff btw.)

Swapped the (perfectly good) used bearings onto the new carrier: before and after backlash and preload were identical, like I didn't change a thing. Prussian blue on the gears showed perfect mesh. No change to any shims necessary at all.

I love it when a project is easier than anticipated!!! A few more weeks (or maybe a month or two, idk) till the front end is rebuilt and I get to road test it!

The MFactory unit is absolutely gorgeous, the very highest quality. It's just beautiful, as close to perfect as it could be in every way. Amazing. Kudos to MFactory--and all you guys that stuck with this crazy GB through thick and thin! Worth the wait, I dare say. Thanks be to God!

No pix, sorry! Yours are great, it all looked the same, went together perfectly. I'll update when the car is back on the road... Thinking I could really use a tougher clutch while I'm this deep in...

reading through this thread.....wow....seems like getting this part made, paid for, and shipped was rough. But I'm glad that people within this community were able to get things back on track.

I'm just going to throw this question out there: Was anyone part of this group buy that has since changed their mind or maybe had something come up, and no longer wants their LSD? If so, shoot me a PM.
