Oh yeah I almost forgot, you don't get a gold star because I read your novel also. So we're even. Besides, it's an imaginary star. Everyone else who read it all can just imagine that they now possess a gold star. No cheating if you didn't read it all, it knows when you cheat.

That 3.4L is a pretty decent engine as well. There's somewhat of a war between the 60 and 90 crowds. The 3.8L is 90 (like a V8), and makes more power stock. But the better balanced 60 3.4L can make more power when modified, though it doesn't have the massive aftermarket support to get it there. The 3800 gets FWD Grand Prix's to sub 10 second quarter miles. I haven't set my sights that high yet!

I don't think I like the fade idea, I don't think it would work on this body since there's already a hard "horizon" line, a natural edge for a color change. Maybe I'd just have to see it.

On the topic of colors: Nearly every other Cutlass of this generation I have seen I didn't like because they were all solid colors from the factory and they look rather bland. The one exception is white, which I normally don't like but I do on this car.

I'm definitely not going white here. There's too much of the existing colors to cover up.

Drained the oil yesterday, then moved on to the transmission fluid... There's no drain plug, so I of course made a huge mess just loosening the pan. It had been leaking so it was already a mess. I should have drained it at the cooler lines.

Loosened the axle nuts with a 3/4" breaker bar and jack handle. Slowly removed them with an underpowered air impact wrench. Took off the passenger side caliper, bracket, rotor. Then the hub, which is held in by four bolts that are threaded in from behind the knuckle and not even visible. I reached them each from behind with different length extentions, expecting the worst considering their age and location, and they came out with relative ease. I wonder if it was supposed to be that easy... Those bolts may have been undertorqued. I stopped there yesterday, as I didn't have a pry bar the right size/shape to pop the axle out of the transmission.

Cleared off a shelf to hold random parts that may or may not be re-used for the new engine:

I never touch a car without the proper manuals, and always attempt to keep tools in use organized, or at least all in one place. In this instance, that place is on top of an old computer desk. Yes, I am that much of a nerd that even my garage has a computer desk...

Went to Advance today and got a fuel-line disconnect tool, an assortment of pry bars, and a T60 socket. I used a T55 on the caliper brackets yesterday, not realizing that was too small until after the bolts were out. Thankfully I didn't strip the bolt, but now I have the right size to use on the drivers side. All I did today was pop out that passenger side axle with the new pry bar and unhook the engine bay fuel lines.

There's not too much more to remove before the engine comes out. I still don't have one to drop in though. That's all for today. I can't wait for the fun parts to start!

The engine is ready to come out. It's all unbolted, just sort of balancing on the two lower mounts. I need to borrow an engine hoist. And I'll need someone to help me hold the hood so I can remove it. Then the fenders can come off after the hood.

The insulation behind the fenders and all along the back of the firewall is completely useless. It falls apart into chunks at the slightest touch. I don't know if that's going to be worth replacing or not. The stuff behind the fenders keeps debris from getting into the door jambs, where it will fall into the cabin if you open the door.

The nuts on two brake lines rounded off when I tried to remove them from the master cylinder. I had to cut the lines.

The extra-parts-pile has multiplied and I now have four of them.

Assuming I can borrow the hoist, the engine is coming out today. Then I'll start cleaning up the engine bay. I have a body shop and paint supply connection, so I'm considering having some paint mixed up in the final exterior color, and I'll spray the engine bay using that color instead of black. Still undecided, I'm kind of starting to like the idea of a black engine bay.
