Not sure about the G2, but when my G1 did that, it was due to a bad fan control unit. It didn't do it all the time, just randomly.

Custom clutch hose

The clutch on the '89 stopped disengaging.

I assumed the clutch slave cylinder had gone bad and replaced it.

It worked OK for a short drive, but then gradually quit working on a longer drive.
