![]() QUESTION! on the crank gear.. when you took off the pulley, was there a washer on both sides of the crank gear? I recently, with a local member, changed out the pulley on mines and when we took the pulley off there was one on each side of the gear, and when reinstalling, we got the timing off by a little and possibly could have forgotten to put the outside washer back on. today my dad and i put the engines timing back correctly and after the engine was running, the belt seemed as if it was being pushed away from the engine off the gears, which led us to look at the washers, and we noticed that either the one between the crank gear and engine is backwards, if thats possible, or that we forgot to put the washer between the gear and pulley.. or both. sorry for the, probably confusing and long post. -Thanks, Tyler |

Are the two washers the same? As in one HAS to be behind it and the other on the front?
Thanks for the input ![]() -Tyler |

They are both identical. They're just installed facing away from each-other.

Awesome DIY I just did my Timing belt on my 93 (which for some reason has that stupid cross member brace, so maybe it is just 91-92 that don't have them) anyways something I wanted to add to this is when you have to remove the driverside cam gear instead of undoing the bolts while the belt is off or using a light zap from an impact like I did. instead what you could do is while the old belt is still on take a socket and wrench and undo them then finger tighten them back on one at a time, so that way you don't run the risk of moving that cam gear and do any damage to the valves. then once the belt is off and you need to get the cam gear off to get to that water pump bolt you can easily and safely remove the cam gear with no worries.

yeah I figured it out after I completed mine too
after the belt was on and I torquing down the three bolts on the cam gear and then it hit me and I was like "son of a bitch!"

I ran into this when I was doing my valve seals with the heads on the engine. I took a break to think clearly about it, because I started to loosen one of the bolts with my ratchet and the cam gears moved slightly, then I pulled out the impact and went to work.

Folks! Thanx for the thread.
I can not for the life of me, break that crank shaft pulley bolt! The parts shops dont have that pulley holding tool! O'Reilly shows it as a rental tool, but don't have it stocked yet. Can't even order it at all! Don't have air at the house, so ended up buying an electrical impact wrench. Tried it today, but cant break that bolt for nothing! I removed the radiator so I have plenty of room, but it's still not enough for the impact to go straight on. So, I attached a union which might mean the full impact is not being transferred onto the bolt. But there is no way I can remove the A/C condensor for more room for the impact. Out of ideas. Seen the starter bump video, but it says to disconnect the starter module to disable the engine, which confuses me to hell. I don't know where the module is or what connector he is refering to. Please help! |
